Do You Need Gravel Under a Concrete Driveway?

Most residential concrete driveways benefit from a properly specified and compacted aggregate base because it can provide uniform support, establish grade, and create a stable working surface. It is not mandatory in every possible soil and design condition, and gravel alone does not solve weak soil or drainage. The written scope should state what lies beneath the concrete and why that section fits the property.

What does an aggregate base do?

An aggregate base can provide uniform support, help establish grade, improve constructability, and support a designed drainage path when the full system allows water to leave.

Concrete pavement guidance emphasizes uniform support rather than treating the base as a simple strength multiplier. A thicker aggregate layer does not automatically compensate for soft areas, poor drainage, or unsuitable fill.

What material and depth should the quote specify?

The quote should specify the proposed aggregate material, compacted depth, preparation method, and reason it fits the site. There is no responsible universal aggregate type or depth for every residential driveway. Local specifications may call for dense-graded aggregate, crushed stone, a stabilized layer, or another approved section. The selection depends on subgrade condition, drainage intent, frost exposure, traffic, elevations, available materials, and the applicable plans or requirements.

  • Material name, source, gradation, and whether it is intended as a base, working platform, drainage layer, or separation layer.
  • Excavation limits and how unsuitable, organic, wet, frozen, or disturbed material will be handled.
  • Compacted depth, lift placement, moisture conditioning, and the specified acceptance or compaction method.
  • Finished elevation and tolerance before concrete placement.
  • Whether a separator, filter, stabilization treatment, or drainage outlet is required.
  • Who verifies the prepared support and documents corrections before the base is concealed.

Does gravel automatically drain water away?

No. An aggregate layer only functions as subsurface drainage when water can enter the intended layer, move through compatible material, and reach a maintained outlet. A permeable layer without positive grade or an outlet can retain water, and fine soil can migrate into open aggregate when filtration or separation is inadequate.

The driveway scope should also direct surface runoff away from the slab, garage, foundation, neighboring property, and areas vulnerable to erosion. Surface grading and subsurface drainage are related decisions, not interchangeable ones.

Can a driveway be placed without an aggregate base?

Some concrete pavement sections can be placed on a properly prepared and accepted subgrade when the soil, loading, drainage, climate, and applicable requirements support that choice. That is a project decision, not permission to place concrete on loose, muddy, frozen, organic, or unverified soil.

If a quote omits an aggregate base, ask the contractor to identify the observed subgrade condition, preparation and acceptance method, drainage approach, local detail, and person responsible for the decision. If proposals differ, compare the reasons and complete sections instead of assuming that more stone is automatically better.

How should homeowners compare driveway quotes?

Put demolition, excavation, subgrade preparation, aggregate material, compacted depth, drainage, slab thickness, edges, reinforcement where specified, joints, concrete requirements, finish, curing, and use restrictions in the same written scope. A line that says only “gravel base included” is not enough to compare proposals.
