What Does 'Poor Man's Concrete' Mean?

“Poor man's concrete” usually refers to soil mixed with Portland cement and water, then compacted and cured to create a hardened surface. The technical term is often soil-cement, although people also use the phrase for other low-cost, cement-stabilized surfaces.

It is not the same as a conventional concrete slab. Concrete contains a designed mixture of cementitious material, water, fine aggregate, and coarse aggregate. Soil-cement uses soil or selected aggregate as the primary material and depends heavily on its composition, moisture, cement content, compaction, and intended use.

Because “poor man's concrete” is an informal phrase rather than a specification, ask exactly what material and installation process a contractor is proposing before comparing prices.

What is engineered soil-cement?

The American Cement Association defines soil-cement as an engineered, densely compacted mixture of soil or aggregate, cementitious material, and water. Representative soil is tested to determine the required cement content, moisture, density, and durability. The project requirements then define mixing, compaction, grading, curing, and verification.

This differs from copying a universal cement-to-soil ratio from an online recipe. Soil composition, moisture, climate, drainage, and expected loads can change the design. A ratio that works for one tested soil may not work for another.

How does soil-cement differ from a concrete slab?

Soil-cement uses soil or selected aggregate as its primary material, while a concrete slab uses a designed concrete mixture placed as a formed element.

  • What material does the proposal mean by the informal term?
  • What is its intended structural or surface role?
  • Were representative soils sampled and tested?
  • Who establishes cement content, moisture, density, thickness, and durability requirements?
  • How will mixing, compaction, grade, drainage, and curing be verified?
  • What surface, maintenance, and repair expectations apply?
