Concrete PSI for Residential Projects
PSI describes the specified compressive strength of hardened concrete. Higher PSI alone does not guarantee a durable driveway, patio, slab, or foundation because performance also depends on thickness, support, drainage, placement, jointing, and curing.
What does concrete PSI mean?
PSI means pounds per square inch. In a concrete specification, it is commonly used to describe compressive strength at a stated test age, often 28 days. It is a property of the tested concrete mix, not a promise that every square inch of a driveway can carry the same number of pounds.
A slab's actual performance depends on the entire system below and around the concrete. Soil support, base preparation, thickness, joints, reinforcement, drainage, placement conditions, and curing can matter as much as the number printed on the mix ticket.
Which PSI should a residential project use?
Residential quotes state a specified compressive strength, but no single PSI value is correct for every project. The required strength can change with project use, climate exposure, local code, approved plans, and the concrete supplier's mix design.

For structural work, use the approved plan and permit requirements rather than a general internet chart. If a contractor recommends a different mix, ask for the reason and have the responsible designer approve any change when plans control the project.
Why does PSI not tell you whether a slab will last?
Compressive strength measures one material property. Residential slab failures also come from settlement, poor drainage, insufficient thickness, restrained movement, surface finishing mistakes, and inadequate curing. Those problems can crack or damage concrete even when the delivered mix meets its specified strength.

What should the written quote say about concrete strength?
- Specified strength: the PSI requirement and the age at which it applies.
- Exposure requirements: any air entrainment or durability requirement for the local climate.
- Project dimensions: slab area and thickness, including thickened edges or footings.
- Base and drainage: excavation, material, depth, compaction, slope, and exclusions.
- Placement and curing: how the crew will place, finish, protect, and cure the concrete.
- Plan responsibility: who confirms the mix against approved structural or permit documents.
What PSI claims should make you ask more questions?
- A contractor sells higher PSI as a substitute for base preparation or slab thickness.
- The quote says only “standard concrete” and gives no strength or exposure specification.
- A structural-slab recommendation conflicts with the approved plan.
- The crew plans to add water for workability without addressing the approved mix or supplier instructions.
- The quote describes concrete strength but omits curing and weather protection.
