What is Concrete Reinforcement?
Rebar, welded wire, and fibers help concrete handle forces it cannot resist well on its own. The right choice depends on what the slab must support and how the reinforcement will be placed.
What is concrete reinforcement?
Concrete reinforcement uses steel bars, welded wire, fibers, or other specified materials to provide tensile capacity, control crack width, or improve post-crack behavior. The intended job depends on the reinforcement type and design. Reinforcement does not guarantee a crack-free slab.
Compressive strength describes how much squeezing force concrete can withstand. Tensile strength describes resistance to being pulled apart. Ground movement, vehicle loads, drying shrinkage, and temperature changes create tension, which is why reinforcement decisions matter for driveways, foundations, and structural slabs.
Reinforcement is only one part of the system. A compacted subgrade, correct slab thickness, planned control joints, drainage, and curing still determine how the slab performs.
What are the main types of concrete reinforcement?
1. Rebar
Designed tensile capacity and crack control
Deformed steel bars can provide tensile capacity, control crack width, or transfer forces when detailed for those purposes. Plans should state bar size, spacing, grade, laps, cover, and support method because the word rebar alone does not define the system.
2. Welded wire reinforcement
Crack-width control in slabs and flatwork
A welded steel grid helps hold cracks tight when it is supported at the specified elevation. Ask for the wire designation, lap, and support method. Wire left on the ground cannot perform as detailed in the slab design.
3. Fiber reinforcement
Plastic-shrinkage control or designed post-crack performance
Fibers are mixed into the concrete at a specified dosage. Some synthetic microfibers are used to reduce plastic-shrinkage cracking. Macrofibers can control crack width or provide post-crack capacity when selected and designed for that purpose. A generic fiber mix does not automatically replace required rebar or welded wire.
