What Is a Concrete Slab?

A concrete slab is a broad, relatively flat concrete element used as a floor, foundation component, pavement, or equipment-support surface. A patio, driveway, garage floor, and structural slab may look similar from above, but they do not share one universal thickness, reinforcement detail, support layer, or concrete specification.

What makes a concrete element a slab?

A slab carries loads across its area and transfers them to supporting soil, a base system, walls, beams, columns, or another structure. Slabs placed on prepared ground are commonly described as slabs on ground. Suspended slabs are supported above the ground by structural elements and require project-specific design.

The word slab does not tell you whether it is structural, how thick it should be, or what reinforcement it needs. Those decisions come from function, loads, support, exposure, local requirements, and approved plans. What belongs in a complete slab scope?

  • Site work: demolition, excavation, grading, access, hauling, and disposal.
  • Support: subgrade, aggregate when needed, compaction, drainage, and soft-area treatment.
  • Geometry: length, width, elevation, slope, thickness, edges, footings, and transitions.
  • Concrete and reinforcement: project requirements, placement, reinforcement, and embedded items.
  • Surface and movement: joints, finish, tolerances, appearance, and drainage.
  • Protection: curing, weather plan, return-to-service limits, cleanup, warranty, and exclusions.
