What Is Concrete Flatwork?

Concrete flatwork is concrete placed to form a generally horizontal surface, including driveways, patios, walkways, garage floors, and equipment pads. The label describes the work, not one universal construction detail. Loads, soil, drainage, exposure, local requirements, and use determine the slab section and written scope.

What counts as residential concrete flatwork?

Flatwork usually consists of prepared support, formed concrete, planned joints, a specified finish, and curing or protection requirements. Some projects also include reinforcement, thickened edges, footings, vapor control, embedded items, or engineered details.

Walls, retaining walls, steps, columns, and structural framing may involve different forming, loading, and design questions. They should not be priced as generic flatwork merely because concrete is the material.

Which decisions define the flatwork system?

  • Support: soil, excavation, aggregate, compaction, soft-area treatment, and drainage.
  • Geometry: dimensions, elevations, slope, thickness, edges, footings, and transitions.
  • Concrete: strength, exposure, placement limits, and approved mixture requirements.
  • Crack planning: contraction, isolation, and construction joints for the actual layout.
  • Reinforcement: type, location, support, and intended purpose when required.
  • Finish and curing: texture, appearance standard, curing, weather protection, and return-to-service instructions.

One PSI, base depth, or joint spacing does not define every project. Use the subgrade guide and joint guide for those decisions. The written scope should also identify the curing method and weather protections.
